The numbers are in and while many retail categories experienced flat margins in 2013, several others came out shining. Apparel and accessories struggled due to pricing competition that drove down profits, but consumer electronics experienced soaring sales and record demand. Here are five of the top sellers across retail last year:
Smartphones. Smartphone sales are driving record highs in growth for the consumer electronics industry, with 2013 unit sales around 130 million, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. The popularity of these do-it-all mobile devices, including tablets, was especially evident during the holiday season; ComScore tallied a cool $314 million spent by U.S. consumers on mobile commerce on Black Friday, topped only by the $350 million spent on Cyber Monday. The biggest sellers in the smartphone category? Samsung and Apple.
A New Ride. Big-ticket items saw a comeback in 2013, with cars seeing a 1.8% gain in sales, according to U.S.A. Today. This is the biggest gain the auto industry has seen in 7 years. Of the 15.6 million new vehicles sold last year, the best-selling brand was the Ford, with the F-Series Truck seeing the most success at 763,402 units sold in the U.S.
TV Streaming Device. This little gadget is affordable, easy to use, and convenient for today’s electronics junkies, giving users a means to stream TV on their computers, tablets, and smartphones. Apple TV and Roku make popular models, but a big seller for Amazon several weeks running in 2013 was the brand-new Chromecast.
A Living Room Set. Consumers did not make a big splash at general merchandise stores like Target and Walmart last year, but the likes of Best Buy and Pottery Barn scored big sales gains, with shoppers investing in the big-ticket home and garden items like furniture, electronics, and appliances. Resurgence in the real estate market, as well as a lot of cold weather, are two big reasons experts cite for this trend.
Wearable Fitness Devices. Wearable tech like body monitors and pedometers is expanding in use as more consumers delve into their health and fitness goals. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, consumer interest in wearable fitness devices quadrupled in 2013 and experienced the largest gain in purchasing intent from 2012. For wearable tech in general, the big seller last year was Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
