Meet Business Intelligence Team Lead Karolis Zumbakis

Question:

How long have you been with Revel and how would you describe your role here?

Answer:

I've been at Revel seven years now. I was one of the earlier team members in the Lithuania office. It's been a great journey at Revel here in Lithuania. My current role is team lead of the business intelligence department. I've been a part of this team for three and a half years or so now, and it's been really the best job I've had so far. I'm very happy in my current role.

Question:

What do you love about your current role?

Answer:

I love both the technical aspects of what I've gotten to learn about the data side of the business, but I also love being able to help people. And it's interesting how it seems like everyone's like, ‘Oh, that guy, he knows something about data, you should reach out to him.’ That's really nice to hear. To get that trust from fellow employees—even from people you don't know that well—that's really rewarding.

Question:

Given the amount of time you've been with Revel, I would love to hear what you've seen change for the Lithuania office. What are some of the major changes that you've seen since you joined the team seven years ago?

Answer:

In the beginning, it was more of a startup atmosphere, sometimes positive, sometimes negative. That was a bit wild. You know, sometimes it's organized, sometimes there's no processes in place. It's really gotten a lot more organized in every department, really, across the board. Also, now, we have a really nice office in Lithuania, which we moved to a while ago. It’s a really nice place to work.

Question:

Because you've seen a lot of change and because you were a Revel employee during COVID, what kinds of things did you do to stay engaged and connected with your co-workers through that? And what are you glad about now that we're back in person?

Answer:

I can say that I was surprised how much I missed the office at first. The first few months, it was fine. It was like, ‘Okay, I get to work from home every day, that's very comfortable, convenient.’ But over time I really missed just casual conversations. Also working person-to-person, you know, humans need that physical contact, right? It’s that communication that Zoom just doesn't provide. So I've been very happy that we've gone back to the office in a hybrid model, which is, I think, a great idea, to give us some flexibility, but also encourage us to work together.

A Closer Look at Business Intelligence at Revel

Question:

What projects have you been working on most recently?

Answer:

A lot of the things that come into our team are requests for information about pretty much anything about a business that can be asked for, from information about what kind of features our clients use to getting a list of contacts for marketing emails to very specific clientele. It could also be things like, understanding why customers are calling us more frequently this month versus the previous month, or what type of issues they're having, and how we can help those customers and also reduce our call volume.

And then other things include, for example, looking at our net promoter score (NPS), which has been a big thing this year. Obviously, we want to reach our goal [for customer satisfaction], and to reach that goal, we also need to understand what is causing our NPS to trend in different directions. So we go through the NPS comments, we categorize them, we try to find trends, identify, and then improve those business areas.

Question:

What excites you about working at Revel? Are there specific projects that you look forward to, or initiatives you enjoy supporting or leading?

Answer:

I don't know if it's specific projects, but it's just the way of life and work at Revel. You have a lot of ability to ask questions and to promote your own ideas and to figure out solutions on your own without having, you know, a ‘big corporate overlords’ type of feeling. You can feel free to reach out to your boss or your boss's boss, or your boss's boss's boss, about something that you think can be improved, or an idea you have. So I think that's really nice. I’ve heard that is not quite as available at other companies.

Question:

What would you say is the primary thing that has kept you here through the years?

Answer:

It's the community. It's the kind of general atmosphere of Revel, which is just quite friendly and collaborative. People are willing to help you if you reach out to somebody. They're very willing to help you and give you what you need or work with you, so it's that collaborative aspect.

And then obviously, from the other side, it's learning. I've had a great opportunity to learn a lot of things through all my roles at Revel, and I've been very happy in my current role. I've been learning continuously in this role. Recently, I've changed my role to team lead as of May, so that's been a new thing for me.

Question:

What personal and/or team attributes do you feel have helped sustain your success here at Revel?

Answer:

I think, for me personally, probably just attention to detail and kind of thinking about what's the end goal of what I'm doing. Also following up is very important, I found. If you want to improve things, or if you have ideas, just follow up with people. Sometimes they forget, or sometimes you yourself, forget.

We covered the ability to ask questions of C-level executives who are also willing to help you out. I think that's quite rare in many companies.

Life Outside of the Office

Question:

When you're not at work, what are some of the things that you do for fun?

Answer:

What I like to do for fun—I enjoy working out at the gym. I enjoy going for bike rides, especially cross country, or mountain biking. And grilling, obviously, in the summer. Right now, I'm actually in the summer house working remotely, so I’ve done a lot of grilling every day.

Question:

What have you grilled most recently?

Answer:

Yesterday night I grilled shrimp.

Question:

Awesome! As we close things out, is there anything that I haven't asked you about that you would like to share? Anything that I missed?

Answer:

I would just like to say ‘Keep up the good work, everyone at Revel.’
