Super Bowl Snacks & Your Grocery Store

Football’s first championship game took place on January 15, 1967 in the Los Angeles Coliseum between the Green Bay Packers of the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs of the AFL. Green Bay won the game 35-10 and an American tradition was born. Over 108 million people watched the Big Game last year; it was the third largest viewing audience for a TV show in history. In fact, nine of the top shows ever watched are pro football championship games.

With so many eyes on TVs during the big game, advertisers are lining up to pay up to 4 million dollars for a 30 second TV commercial guaranteed to reach millions of viewers at parties around the world. If you own a grocery store, chances are the 4 million dollar tab for a commercial during the game isn’t in your budget. But, Revel Systems has a few ideas on how to get ready for the increased business coming your way in preparation for next Sunday.

In the United States, the average Super Bowl party consists of 17 people who inevitably consume large amounts of food and beverages. A story from Examiner states that fans will eat over 1.23 billion chicken wings (100 million pounds of chicken), and purchase 51.7 million cases of beer for those parties. Of course it’s not just wings and beer, 11.2 million pounds of chips will be eaten along with 8 million pounds of avocados in the form of Guacamole will also be served. And, let’s not forget about the 3.8 million pounds of popcorn. All in all it’s a big day for grocery stores across the nation.

While stocking up on chicken wings, beer and other party snacks is a no brainer, knowing exactly how many to order can be a challenging task. That’s where a Grocery POS system comes in. Revel’s POS Systems automate a wide variety of tools to help you get the most out of the “unofficial holiday” for football fans across the US. We outlined a few of these options in our blog post, “Touchdown: How to Get Football Fans into Your Restaurant” in September 2013.

With Revel, you’ll be able to pull up last year’s numbers so you’re ready to place this year’s orders. Revel’s intelligent reporting suite will help you make informed business decisions--by seeing which items sold best last year, you’ll be able to reorder and maximize profits for this year. You can also keep tabs on inventory so you’ll know when it’s time to restock the freezer with wings, the fridge with ice cold beer and soda, and the shelves with chips and other snacks. And, by taking the guess work out of ordering and stocking products, your staff is better able to serve customers coming in for that last minute rush or halftime pit stop. Revel’s iPad POS System can save you so much time that you might actually get to watch the Super Bowl yourself this year.
